General Dentistry: How a Dentist Can Use Dental Bonding to Repair Teeth

A dental clinic isn't limited to cleaning and examinations. If you're not confident in your smile, you can turn to your dentist for cosmetic procedures as well. Dental bonding, in particular, is a popular choice for people who want teeth worth showing off.

How dental bonding works

Dental bonding is a simple procedure for repairing teeth or altering their appearance. The process uses a durable, enamel-colored composite resin (a type of plastic) that is applied to the surface of the tooth. Generally, bonding can be done in a single visit and doesn't require anesthesia except for some cavities.

First, the dentist uses a shade guide to match your teeth to the right color of resin. They then roughen the target surface slightly and apply a conditioning liquid to help the resin bond effectively. The resin, initially in a putty-like state, is applied and molded into the proper shape. The dentist then uses a UV light to harden the resin. Finally, they further shape the resin as needed and polish it to match the surrounding enamel.

Dental bonds are commonly used to repair chipped or cracked teeth or to mask discoloration. They also work as an alternative to amalgam fillings for treating cavities or protecting roots exposed by receding gums. For more cosmetic purposes, bonding can close tooth gaps or adjust the shape and length of teeth for a more photogenic smile.

Benefits of dental bonding

Tooth bonding is quick, inexpensive, and readily accessible for patients. Many dental clinics are able to perform dental bonding. The procedure requires little preparation beforehand, unlike crowns or veneers that must be custom-made ahead of time. Bonding also requires less removal of enamel than these procedures. Additionally, for anything besides filling a cavity, the procedure doesn't require any sort of anesthesia, also shortening the length of the operation. A single visit with about 30 to 60 minutes in the chair is all it takes. For small cosmetic changes, as well as minor cavities, this is one of the fastest procedures you can get.

Dental bonding procedures are relatively low in price. Your dental insurance may cover the cost partially or in full.

Keep in mind that the resin isn't exactly as strong as natural enamel, but you shouldn't have to worry about the bonding separating from the tooth as you would with a conventional crown or filling. Avoid habits like biting fingernails or chewing on ice, follow good oral hygiene routines, and be mindful of dark beverages that can stain the resin. Bondings, if properly cared for, should last from five to 10 years before needing replacement.

Dental bonding isn't a one-size-fits-all fix, though. For more extensive cosmetic changes or in the case of advanced tooth decay, your dentist will recommend something else. Additionally, back teeth such as molars are subject to stronger bite forces, which may make bonding infeasible for fear of damaging the resin.
