How Diet Can Affect Oral Health

You might not realize it, but the food you eat can significantly impact your dental health over time. Eat a balanced diet

Your teeth must get all the nutrients they need, including calcium and phosphates. Foods with these two elements are essential for strong bones and healthy gums. Examples of foods rich in both include:

  • Cheese
  • Dark chocolate
  • Dried fruit
  • Milk
  • Nuts and seeds
  • Salmon or tuna
  • Spinach and kale
  • Yogurt

In general, eating a balanced diet in dentistry will help reduce the risk of cavities, gum disease, and other oral health problems.

Avoid sugary snacks

Sugar is a leading cause of tooth decay. Sugary foods coat the teeth with sticky sugar particles that bacteria feed on to produce acids. These can eat away at your enamel over time until you develop cavities from all the holes in your teeth. To reduce your risk of developing cavities, avoid sugary snacks like candy bars or soda drinks that can leave a sticky residue behind on the surface of your teeth after you eat them.

Limit snacking

Some people find it difficult to eat three meals a day and will therefore snack in between. While this is fine on occasion, too many snacks can lead to tooth decay. Opt for healthy (and crunchy) options like carrots or celery sticks with hummus instead of sweet treats like fruit snacks or chocolate bars if you need to snack.

You can also opt for an apple to get similar benefits from the fiber it has. They contain nutrients that keep your teeth and gums strong. In addition, fiber helps remove potentially harmful food particles as you chew, so they do not stay stuck on your teeth after you swallow them.

If you are still craving something sweet, try a fruit smoothie with yogurt and honey instead. Yogurt has the same benefits as cheese in providing your teeth with calcium and phosphates to help strengthen them. Honey is also rich in antioxidant properties that fight inflammation throughout the body, including our mouths.

Also, be sure to drink plenty of water. Water helps rinse your mouth and clear away food particles that might cause cavities if left in the crevices between your teeth for too long. It also flushes out any acid produced by bacteria feeding on sugar molecules, which reduces the risk of tooth decay.

Be careful with acidic foods and drinks

You might not realize it, but some types of food are more harmful to your enamel than others because they are acidic. Acidic foods and drinks like oranges, lemons, limes, and grapefruit can wear down your tooth enamel over time.

For example, if you are snacking on sugary foods all day long and then drinking orange juice to try to make up for it, your enamel will still be wearing down over time. To avoid this, try not to eat or drink any of these in excess (ideally no more than once per week), and consider whether you are eating them on top of sugary snacks like candy bars or soda drinks.
