Sedation Dentistry Helps East Dental Anxiety

Sedation dentistry can reduce anxiety and help you feel calm and relaxed during dental treatment. At Everest Dental, we offer two different types of sedation: oral sedation and nitrous oxide (laughing gas).

Nitrous Oxide: Nitrous oxide is a mild sedative that works quickly and does not put you to sleep. It is safe and effective for all ages and has been used effectively in dentistry for years.

Oral Sedation: Oral sedation involves taking a pill before your procedure to help you feel completely relaxed. The effects last longer than your procedure, so you will need a responsible adult to drive you home.

Don’t let anxiety prevent you from taking care of your oral health. Ask your dentist about which sedation option may be right for you.

01.

Prepare for Your Procedure

  • Review your health history. You’ll discuss your medical history, dental anxiety, and treatment needs before choosing a sedation option.
  • Discuss your sedation method. Your dentist will determine whether oral sedation or nitrous oxide is appropriate for your needs.
  • Follow your instructions. You’ll receive specific directions based on the type of sedation you’re receiving.
  • Take oral sedation as directed. If you receive oral sedation, you’ll typically take the prescribed pill about one hour before your procedure.
  • Ask questions beforehand. Make sure you understand what to expect from your sedation and dental treatment before your appointment.

02.

Next Steps

  • Allow the sedation to wear off. Your recovery time depends on the type and amount of sedation you receive, as well as individual factors such as metabolism and tolerance.
  • If you receive oral sedation, a trusted adult will need to drive you home. Don’t operate heavy machinery for several hours.
  • Follow your home care instructions provided by your dentist after your dental procedure.
  • Monitor how you feel. Sedation effects can persist after treatment, depending on the method used.
  • Call our office if you have any concerns.

FAQ

  • Will I be asleep during my sedation procedure?

Nitrous oxide will not put you to sleep. Oral sedation helps you feel deeply relaxed and may leave you with little memory of your procedure.

  • Who is a good candidate for dental sedation?

You may benefit if you have dental anxiety, a low pain threshold, a strong gag reflex, extensive treatment needs, or trouble sitting still.

  • Can I drive myself home after being sedated?

If you received oral sedation, you will need to arrange for a trusted adult to drive you home. Nitrous oxide wears off quickly, and you can drive yourself home after your procedure.
